Now that the holidays have passed, many residents are putting away decorations and get back into the normal routine of daily life. However, fraudsters never rest and are at it again here locally. Amarillo Police department has had several reports of a new scam in which an individual’s cell phones rings one time and then hangs up. A curious cell phone holder then returns the call only to find out later that they have been charged a $19.95 fee plus $9 per minute spent on the return call. You can imagine the outrage when you open up a phone bill equivalent to a mortgage payment! We encourage you to be aware, alert and dedicated to protecting your personal information. These mysteriously expensive phone calls are coming from the following area codes: 268, 284, 473, 809, & 876. As we have been previously cautioned, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is” we now remind you to consider the following, “if they don’t leave a message, it probably isn’t too important.” A technological “Stranger Danger” for you to consider for all the phones on your current plan.
